About Cooma Rotary Club

The Full Story

Rotary is an international Service Club founded in 1905 whose motto is SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Since its conception by Paul Harris and six other men it has been giving to community- local, national and internationally for the betterment of all. Rotary is now in over 200  countries of the world and has over 35,000 clubs. It's ethos of working together has seen the eradication of wild Polio and worked tirelessly throughout the world bringing clean water, education and better lives for many.

Our club was charted in 1953 and since then we have been dedicating our Service to the Cooma and now Snowy Monaro Regional Council area.

We meet every WEDNESDAY evening at 6pm for fellowship and a meal followed by our meeting at 7pm. At present our meeting venue is the Cooma Bowling and Country Club Mawson Lane.

Our first club project was taking 300 children to see the Queen in Canberra in 1954, then we built Rotary Oval, created playgrounds, purchased equipment for training at Cooma Hospital, assisted schools of our district to get students to Cooma pools so they can learn to swim Stage 1- a pool that the club raised money to build in the 1960's.

We helped build so many other facilities and parks- including Norris Park & the paving in Centennial and in Cooma.

In the past 10 years we have Built raised gardens at Weranina to assist in their activities, provided seating at Sir William Hudson Nursing home - a facility which we helped build and landscape, provided headphones for patients with dementia to listen to music, helped enable 20 wheelchair bound people to get to the top of Mt Kosciusko - pushing and pulling them from Charlottes Pass to the Summit. Installed seats along the main street of Cooma for the comfort of all. B Sent aid and money to areas suffering drought in 2018-19 and then flooding other disaster zones in NSW and built the cricket practice nets at Nijong Oval.

In the past 4 years have enabled the PRAM WALKS in both Jindabyne and Cooma assisting young families to adjust, keep fit and be connected to their community,  joined together with Lions to create a memorial for the airmen killed helping protect our district in 2019-20 bushfires and finish the pathway along Cooma Back Creek towards Lambie Gorge.

Our latest installation(September 2025) is chess tables to Centennial Park for all to enjoy.

Along with our own community enhancement we have also been active internationally- aid such as clean water supplies to Nepal and Papua New Guinea, sponsored nurses from Thailand to train at Cooma Hospital, supplied computers and school equipment for children in Papua New Guinea and Nepal, rebuilt and supplied both bikes and training in bike maintenance for kids in New Guinea.

Plus supported Rotary's own charity in its endeavour to eradicate Polio.

We continuously support our next generation. Enabling students to experience life in another culture for a year, helping them to attend National Youth Science Forum's annually, run local debating competitions to build confidence encourage critical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to analyse complex issues from multiple view points helping to create confident leaders and community members for the future. And much more

Our list just keeps growing, always serving our Community.

The only way we can keep this all happening is by raising money and our biggest project fund raiser THE MARKETS. These enable us to do so with the money raised from stall fees and BBQ fare going with all profit going back into our Community. This will only continue with your support. Your support either by becoming a member or coming along and supporting our markets.

If you would like to be part of our club please send a message to us to secretary@coomarotary.org.au

Pick up a pamphlet at the markets.
